Thomas Holz

I’m an audio enthusiast with a background in music, acoustics, and linguistics. In my professional and academic life, I have gained experience in audio signal processing as a software developer and machine learning engineer.


About Me

I have two Bachelor’s degrees: one in English and American Studies & Musicology and the other in Audio and Video. During the latter, I did a semester abroad at LTU in Southfield, MI where I was studying Audio Engineering. After that, I decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Audio Communication and Technology. During that time, I worked as a Machine Learning Engineer Intern at Apple. At that time, I worked on my Master’s thesis titled Automatic Drum Transcription with Deep Neural Networks under the supervision of Prof. Weinzierl and Andreas Arzt.

In my spare time, I am the drummer of Fil der Protagonist and a volunteer at the NGO educat.


Work Samples

Automatic Drum Transcription

This is a short demo of my Master’s thesis implementation of a deep learning-based automatic drum transcription (ADT). At first, you will hear the originally recorded drums followed by the ADT version, where all (sub)types of drum hits are mapped to Kick, Snare, Tom, Hi-Hat, Crash, Ride, and Bell. Finally, I transition from the original recording to the ADT version so that you can directly compare the two outcomes.

Drum Solo

During my Bachelor’s in Audio and Video, I studied drums for 3 years. The video shows an improvised solo which I played as part of my final exam.

Sonification

In order to better understand the changes of COVID-19, we implemented a sonification of the RKI COVID-19 dataset using Python and Faust. Follow this link to get to the code on GitHub.

Synthesizer

The synthesizer was developed in a group of 3 students during my 2nd semester. Our goal was to create a functioning Pure Data patch and write an additional external in C. You can find the GitHub repo of the project here.
